The Train des Gorges, an authentic stroll

The taste of authenticity, an out of time discovery, at the steam pace : welcome aboard the “Train de l'Ardèche” . It is also known as the “Petit Train du Vivarais” or “Mastrou” meaning “The small train from Lamastre” in the local dialect. This historical train was part of the Vivarais network and was operated by the departmental railway company. It used to be a true economic link between the Rhône Valley and the plateau ardéchois (north part of the county). The line was shut down in 1968 due to the development of the road network. One year later, the railroad became a tourist site.

Live a unique experience on this centenary steam train in the heart of gorges classified as a sensitive natural site. The Gorges Train if a half day trip, 1 hour 15 minutes round trip between the train station of Tournon-sur-Rhône/Saint-Jean-de-Muzols until Colombier-le-Vieux/Saint-Barthélémy-le-Plain. An 8 kilometer trip (16 kilometers round trip), in the most precious part of the gorges where you can admire stunning wild panoramas, the fauna and flora with Mediterranean influences, very similar to scub.

This train is a true heritage, a time travel, rich in tradition, a reminder of the charm of another era, a not to be missed experience in your terroir journey. Consult the days and times of the Train des Gorges and/or of the Mastrou , we strongly recommand to reserve it in advance during summer time.
