The fruits of the Rhône Valley
The smell of apricots, the color of cherries, the juice of ripe peaches, the sweet aromas of strawberries, so many delicacies made in Ardèche Hermitage so many reasons why our Terroir is famous. What a pleasure to buy fruit on the roadsides, to meet the small local producer, selling the harvest of the day. In the Rhône Valley, fruit is a long-standing story! The Burlat cherry, for example, was created on the banks of the Rhone River by Mr. Burlat in 1915. The same goes for the Bergeron apricot which owes its name to its creator and which offers such a fragrant flavor. Find our producers on the edges of the RD 86 towards Lyon or Valence, the D532 towards Romans and the N7 towards Valence.
Souvenirs with the good taste of fruits from the Rhône Valley! The Nectardéchois workshop, a cooperative created in 1998, allows producers to come and transform their fruits into juice and nectars packaged on site, ideal for bringing the good Ardèche Hermitage products back in your suitcases;). Without forgetting all the jams and other chestnut creams, essentials of our local gastronomy, special mentions for the Ferme des Genêts and Entre 2 Champs labeled organic farming.
Criques et Caillettes (local specialities), a gourmet Ardèche duo
The beautiful local specialties! Caillette, a specialty of pork and chopped vegetables (spinach, chard but also sometimes chestnuts!). Prepared in Ardèche since the 16th century, the curd is a staple of our tables: gratin, cold like a terrine, pan-fried in a salad ... Ideally accompanied by a crique: grated potato specialty that we cook like a pancake. Another ancestral tradition in Ardèche because the potato was described as early as 1600 by Olivier de Serres, famous Ardèche agronomist, long before the famous Mr. Parmentier.
Saint Félicien cheeses
Ah the famous Saint Félicien ... which is produced in Isère! However, the village of St Félicien is the cradle of Caillé-Doux. A cheese, made from goat's milk, with a drying time of only 2 to 4 days, which gives it a particularly sweet flavor. For lovers of more full-bodied cheese there is the famous Picodon. A beautiful PDO which proudly defends its colors! A blue-veined goat cheese that goes perfectly with the white wines of the region. A good address: the Ferme de l'Amélie in Préaux, direct sale at the farm, of picodon and Caillé-Doux ... « Tomme cheese » in Ardèche Hermitage is also eaten in salads! A subtle blend of fresh cow's cheese, garlic and toasted rapeseed oil, also referred to as coleslaw oil in the region. With potatoes, caillettes, all accompanied by salad, no doubt it smells good of Ardèche. Special mention to the Ferme de Réat which jealously guards the secret of its recipe. Find Réat's farm on the Saint Félicien and Tain l'Hermitage markets.
La Pogne Donatienne: the Ronjat house
Another local product, a local brioche with the taste of orange blossom, specialties dating from the Middle Ages, it is the « Pogne ». If the one of Romans sur Isère is the most famous, that of Saint Donat sur Herbasse remains a sweet treasure ! Impossible to mention the latter without talking about the Ronjat family, creators of this Pogne Donatienne. In the 18th century Antoine Ronjat obtains a concession to produce the bread that the monks give to the needy, we then speak of "penitents' bread", and this is how the love story between Ronjat and the art of the bakery. They will also be at the origin of the recipe for the famous Pogne from St Donat which will be patented in 1910.
